A real paradise
Costa Rica is truly phenomenal. Running from northwest to southeast is a series of volcanic mountain ranges with many active volcanoes. The eastern coast is made up of vast lowlands with salt marshes, mangroves and wide sandy beaches. The western coast, in contrast, is hilly with many inlets, rocks and narrow intimate beaches. All in all, more than 600 miles of sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and turquoise blue sea: Costa Rica has more than enough to make it a vacation paradise!
Want more than just swimming and sunbathing? Costa Rica gives you more – lots more!
San José is the capital city of Costa Rica and the political, economic and cultural heart of the country. Although the city has few remaining historic buildings, it more than makes up for this with its tranquil parks, busy open-air markets and many museums. The city’s wide range of souvenir shops and colorful nightlife also contribute to making San José a very attractive destination.
The Museo del Oro and the Museo de Jade exhibit exquisite gold and jade artifacts that provide a good impression of ancient Latin American culture. Also highly recommended are the Museo de los Niños (especially for children), the Museo Nacional (about the history of the country), the Museo de Arte Costarricense (featuring works of Costa Rican artists), and the Entomology Museum at the University of Costa Rica.
One of the biggest sightseeing attractions in Costa Rica is Volcán Arenal. This magnificent volcano (height: 5456 feet) just might be the most beautiful of its kind and it still displays frequent signs of activity. The best time to visit the volcano is at night when you can watch the glowing lava flows and see the fireworks of red-hot rock fragments shooting into the sky. Also try to include a visit to La Fortuna de San Carlos – the village at the foot of the volcano – and the impressive waterfall nearby.
Near Volcán Arenal is the Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort. The springs that feed it, located in a partially manmade park, are the source of streams and waterfalls naturally heated by the volcano to a very comfortable 104°F. After climbing the volcano, immersing yourself in the pleasantly warm water relaxes every fiber of your being. The therapeutic effect is enhanced when you start with a pool at a relatively low temperature around 72°F and gradually work your way up to warmer pools. The view to Volcán Arenal from the hot springs is also incredible.
The Manuel Antonio Parque Nacional located on the coast is a wonderful nature sanctuary for flora and fauna and attracts many nature-lovers every year. The park is made up of extensive forests and a string of beautiful bays with sandy beaches and rocks. Inside the park, trails take you right into monkey habitats where you will encounter howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys as well as coatis and iguanas. It’s also a great spot to go snorkeling in the sea.
