On small and sparsely populated Tobago, it’s often the little things that make the island big. Hiking through the jungle, standing under a waterfall, enjoying the sight of the turtles on the sparkling white beaches, exploring the beautiful underwater world and much, much more. A vacation paradise where relaxing enjoyment and active relaxation combine in perfect harmony.
Sports and games
A whole spectrum of water sports is possible on and around Tobago, like windsurfing or water skiing. A visit to the lovely reefs (such as the protected Buccoo Reef) is an absolute imperative for any diver. Prefer not to go into the water? Enjoy the beautiful underwater world from a glass-bottomed boat. Fishing and sailing are also among the options on Tobago.
Have the time of your life on the golf course
Is golf your real passion? Then you’ll be happy to know that you won’t have to miss anything when you’re on vacation in Tobago. The island boasts two 18-hole courses: the Mount Irvine Championship Golf Course, with a gorgeous view of the Caribbean Sea, and the Tobago Plantations, sprawled out over a former sugarcane plantation. It’s almost never busy on the golf course, because the local population prefers playing cricket.
Celebrating carnival
Want to dive right into the intensely cheerful atmosphere of Trinidad and Tobago? Come to the islands in February, when they’re celebrating carnival. This fabulous annual party on Trinidad brings in a flood of visitors from all over the world every time. No wonder - it’s a great experience!
Relaxed: liming
If you see the men who live on Tobago chilling and sipping a tall drink, they’re probably liming. The story goes that this ‘occupation’ dates back to the first sailors to visit the island, who were so sick from scurvy that they could hardly move and had to supplement their vitamin deficiency by eating huge amounts of limes and oranges. Even if you’re not sick, liming is a fun way to hang out!
Shark expedition – who’s up for it?
Sharks are a real sensation in Trinidad and Tobago. In Tobago you can go on a diving safari to encounter these predators of the sea. You’ll be most likely to see such rare species as the great nurse shark, the tiger shark, and the hammerhead shark along the southern and western coast of Tobago (Buccoo Reef). A diving excursion will also take you past many exotic fish, like the giant manta ray, tarpon, and kingfish, and even dolphins.
Sunday School in Buccoo
Did you go to Sunday school as a child? Sunday School in Buccoo - which starts at 10 p.m. - is sure to be a whole different experience! The weekly homage to the Caribbean street party consists of food, drink, and dancing until dawn, often accompanied by steel pan music.
On safari in Nariva Swamp
On a boat tour through Nariva Swamp (the only freshwater swamp in the southern Caribbean) you’ll be able to see monkeys, lizards, manatees and black caimans, as well as over 150 species of birds, including brightly colored parakeets and plump blackbirds!
